Ponte Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, Road bridge over Lake Paranoá in Brasília, Brazil
This road bridge crosses Lake Paranoá and connects two neighborhoods of Brasília with a modern steel structure spanning about 1,200 meters. The construction features three unequal arches that rise noticeably above the water and define the city's skyline.
The bridge was constructed in the early 2000s and opened in 2002 to better serve the growing city's transportation needs. It was built when Brasília was expanding and required new infrastructure to connect its districts more efficiently.
The bridge bears the name of President Juscelino Kubitschek, the political figure who dreamed of moving Brazil's capital from the coast to the interior and made it happen during the 1950s.
The roadway has six traffic lanes divided into separate directions, with dedicated paths for cyclists and pedestrians running along both sides. Visitors should know the bridge carries heavy traffic during the day, but the side paths offer good views of the lake.
Four concrete pillars anchor into Lake Paranoá's bed while steel cables form an interlaced pattern supporting the bridge deck from the diagonal arches.
