Chimanimani National Reserve encompasses 656 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, dense forests, rocky landscapes, and diverse ecosystems supporting endemic species and rare flora adapted to high-altitude conditions.
Established initially as a national reserve in 2003 and elevated to national park status in 2020, this protected area was created to strengthen conservation efforts and preserve Mozambique's natural heritage.
Local indigenous communities surrounding the reserve maintain traditional beliefs, preserve ancient rock cave paintings, and practice customs that reflect their deep spiritual connection with the mountainous landscape and natural environment.
Access to the reserve requires four-wheel-drive vehicles via Machipanda border through Chimoio or Beira, with accommodation available at Chikukwa guesthouse, Mahate, Ndzow Camp, and designated camping sites at Nhahomba Gate.
The reserve contains Monte Binga, Mozambique's highest peak at 2,436 meters, which attracts mountain climbers and offers commanding views while hosting distinctive high-altitude ecosystems and endemic wildlife species.
