Caverne Dufour, Natural cave at Mount Piton des Neiges, Réunion
Caverna Dufour is a natural cave in Salazie located at approximately 2,480 meters elevation at the base of Piton des Neiges and provides shelter from mountain weather. The site functions as a mountain lodge with four dormitories containing about 48 beds.
The cave was named in 1801 by Jean-Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent after his patron Mr. Dufour during exploration of Reunion Island. This naming preserves the memory of early investigations into this alpine region.
The cave functions as a key stopping point for hikers attempting to summit Piton des Neiges, bringing together mountain climbers from around the world. The site marks a meaningful threshold between lower elevations and the high-altitude landscape above.
The location is accessible for overnight stays, but reservations must be arranged in advance through the Cilaos tourist office. The elevation and exposed location mean weather can change rapidly, and warm clothing is recommended.
From this location, hikers can reach the Piton des Neiges summit in roughly 75 minutes and observe three natural cirques from the peak. This short distance to the highest point of the Indian Ocean makes the cave an excellent base for this summit expedition.
