Coteau Kerveguen, Mountain ridge in Saint-Benoît, Réunion
Coteau Kerveguen is a ridge located at around 2200 meters elevation along the western edge of Bébour Forest on Reunion Island. The formation rises gradually with boggy sections and creates a natural divide between different zones of the highland plateau.
The ridge takes its name from the Kerveguen family, prominent landowners and merchants who shaped Reunion's development during the 19th century. This naming reflects the era when European families began expanding into the island's highland regions.
This ridge forms part of the GR R2 long-distance walking route, connecting remote areas and popular camping shelters across the highlands. Hikers who follow this path become part of a network of travelers exploring Reunion's mountain regions.
Good physical fitness and sturdy footwear are needed because of marshy ground and uneven terrain throughout the route. Visit outside the rainy season for safer conditions and clearer views across the highland areas.
From this ridge you look directly onto the northeastern rock wall of the natural Cirque de Cilaos, a striking geological formation. The rare vantage point showing this famous rock amphitheater is something many hikers overlook.
