The pass received its name from the cattle presence at its base, particularly in the Plaine des Tamarins area, which continues to this day.
The neighboring settlement of La Nouvelle maintains the only bakery in the Mafate cirque, serving as a central point for local community gatherings.
Visitors can park their vehicles in a monitored parking area for 10 euros per night before starting their exploration of the surrounding trails.
The viewpoint provides simultaneous views of both Mafate and Salazie cirques, revealing geographical formations shaped by volcanic activity.
