Spencer Street Power Station, Coal-fired power station in central Melbourne, Australia
Spencer Street Power Station was a coal-fired electricity plant in central Melbourne equipped with multiple generators and turbo-alternators. The facility powered the city through various machines that operated at different output levels throughout its working life.
The facility began operating in 1894, initially supplying electricity for street lighting before expanding to meet Melbourne's growing power demand. After nearly 90 years of service, it closed in 1982 and was later demolished.
The station represents the evolution of Australian industrial architecture and engineering practices during the Victorian era and early 20th century.
The site is no longer accessible as the entire facility was completely demolished between 2006 and 2008. A new residential development called Upper West Side was constructed in its place afterward.
The facility was part of a hydraulic power system that began serving city elevators in 1887. This system ran alongside the electrical generation for many decades before the station finally closed.
