Cooma Cottage

Cooma Cottage is a colonial homestead with classical wings and a Greek Revival portico, situated on 100 acres of pastoral land. The building blends European architectural influences with the needs of Australian country life in the 19th century.

The noted explorer Hamilton Hume purchased the property in 1839 and made it his home until his death in 1873. Hume's acquisition was tied to his exploration of the Yass region, which drove development of the area.

The cottage holds original furnishings and personal items that show how prosperous families lived on the land. These objects give visitors a direct view into daily life during the early colonial period.

The property is accessible mainly on weekends for visitors and requires some planning before a visit. The large estate makes comfortable shoes worthwhile, as the grounds involve considerable walking to explore.

The grounds hold a rare Picconia tree, a species nearly extinct in its native Canary Islands. This botanical rarity stands as a living record of 19th-century garden culture.
