Murrawarri Republic, Micronation
The Murrawarri Republic is a territory spanning parts of Queensland and New South Wales that is claimed by a group asserting itself as an independent state. The area consists mainly of dry grassland with hot summers and cooler winters, with most rainfall occurring during the summer months.
The Murrawarri declared independence in 2013, demanding that the British Queen and Australian officials provide documents proving the land had been ceded. When the government did not respond, they considered themselves a free nation under international law.
The name and symbols of this movement reflect the traditional Muruwari language and the connection to ancestral lands. The eight points on the flag represent eight clan groups, and the colors show a lived relationship with the land, water, and sky that remains visible in how people view their territory.
The territory is mainly dry and hot with wide open spaces that are easy to navigate. Visitors should prepare for extreme temperature swings and bring plenty of water and sun protection.
Despite lacking official recognition, a Ministry of Defence was established in 2013 to demonstrate capability for self-protection. This unusual step shows how seriously the Murrawarri pursued their independence claim.
