Madriz Department, Administrative department in northern Nicaragua
Madriz Department is an administrative region in northern Nicaragua with mountains, farming areas, and nine separate municipalities. The territory spans different elevations and connects to major highways through its capital Somoto.
This region was officially established on November 11, 1936, after separating from Nueva Segovia department. The name was chosen to honor President José Madriz, who played a role in Nicaraguan politics at that time.
The municipalities across the department hold local festivals where you can hear traditional music, see regional dances, and taste local food. These celebrations reveal how communities here maintain their customs and everyday identity.
You can reach the region most easily through Somoto, which connects to the country's main road network. The best time to explore is during the dry season, when travel conditions are most stable.
The mountain areas grow specific coffee varieties at elevations between 1,000 and 1,500 meters. These coffees are among Nicaragua's most valuable agricultural exports.
