Cerro del Cubilete, Religious mountain site in Silao, Mexico
Cerro del Cubilete is a mountain in Silao, Mexico, standing at 2579 meters (8461 feet) elevation with a 20-meter (66-foot) bronze statue of Christ at its summit. A circular basilica surrounds the monument with eight columns, and from the top you can see the surrounding plains and the city of Guanajuato in the distance.
The first Christ statue on this summit was destroyed in 1928 during the anti-religious campaign under President Plutarco Elías Calles. The current monument was rebuilt in 1950 after the persecution of religious symbols in Mexico had eased.
Each January, thousands of riders arrive here representing their villages in a pilgrimage that has remained alive for generations. Believers light candles and pray before the monument while pilgrims from across the country climb the paved paths to the summit.
Roads from Silao and Guanajuato lead to the base, where parking areas and occasional buses arrive. The wind at the summit can be strong, so a light jacket is helpful even on warm days.
The eight columns inside the basilica represent the ecclesiastical provinces of Mexico at the time of its dedication. A metal crown suspended above the altar hangs from the ceiling and is sometimes illuminated at night.
