Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Research reserve and estuarine habitat in Baldwin County, Alabama.
Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is a protected coastal area in Baldwin County, Alabama, where wetlands, salt marshes, forests, and aquatic zones come together along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. A visitor center on Highway 98 near Fairhope serves as the starting point, with wooden boardwalks leading through the different habitats and a boat ramp providing water access.
The reserve was designated in 1986 as part of a national program set up to protect and study coastal estuaries across the country. Weeks Bay was among the first sites in Alabama to receive this federal protection, which brought research funding and long-term monitoring to the area.
The reserve sits where the Fish River meets Mobile Bay, and this mix of fresh and salt water shapes everything visitors see along the wooden boardwalks. The interpretive center helps people understand what they are looking at, making the visit educational rather than just a walk in nature.
The reserve is easy to reach by car from Highway 98 near Fairhope, with parking available at the visitor center. Trails are flat and walkable in most conditions, but insect protection is a good idea during warmer months.
Parts of the reserve support carnivorous plants such as sundews, which thrive in the low-nutrient soils where fresh water sits close to the surface. This type of habitat is rare along the Gulf Coast and makes the area botanically unusual compared to other protected coastal sites.
