Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park is a coastal preserve with forests of pine and palmetto trees extending to sandy beaches. A network of trails connects wooded sections to shoreline areas, allowing visitors to explore both landscapes on foot.

Conservation authorities established this protected area in the 1930s to preserve the natural coastal landscape. The land was later expanded and developed with visitor facilities and trail infrastructure.

The visitor center explains how the beach and forest connect, with rangers discussing the importance of coastal protection for the community. Educational programs teach about wildlife ranging from migratory birds to sea turtles that use these waters.

Overnight options range from tent camping to cottages located near the freshwater lake, with facilities spread throughout the grounds. Trails are well-marked and generally easy to walk, making them suitable for half-day outings at any time of day.

A large freshwater lake sits surprisingly close to saltwater bays, creating a rare transition between two very different water environments. This proximity allows visitors to experience both ecosystems in one location.
