Mothers of Gynecology Monument, Bronze memorial in downtown Montgomery, United States.
The monument consists of three bronze figures representing Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, each standing about fifteen feet tall. The sculptures incorporate metallic elements that symbolize medical instruments, directly linking the women's bodies to their medical history.
In the 1840s, Dr. J. Marion Sims subjected these three enslaved women to repeated experimental surgeries without anesthesia. From these painful procedures, Sims developed gynecological techniques that established his medical reputation.
The monument honors African American women whose contributions to medicine came through suffering and forced participation in experiments. It brings their stories into public view and acknowledges their central role in medical progress.
The monument is located downtown and easily accessible to visitors. Check opening hours before your visit, as access times may be limited depending on the day.
Artist Michelle Browder created the monument in 2021 using recycled metal parts sourced from scrapyards and industrial sites. This material choice carries special meaning, showing how something powerful can emerge from discarded materials.
