Boca Chica Key, Island in Monroe County, United States.
Boca Chica Key is an island in Monroe County, Florida, lying along the Overseas Highway between mile markers 6.5 and 8, bordered by salt marshes and mangrove forests. Much of the island is occupied by a naval air station, which means that only certain areas are open to the public.
In the 1940s, a naval air station was established on the island, growing into the largest naval aviation facility in South Florida. That military presence has shaped the island ever since, defining how land is used and who can access it.
The island's name comes from Spanish and means 'small mouth', a naming style found throughout the Florida Keys. Spanish place names are common in this part of Florida, left over from the time when the region was under Spanish influence.
The island is accessible via Boca Chica Road, which branches off the Overseas Highway. Because much of the land is under military control, it is worth checking in advance which areas are currently open to visitors.
Before Kennedy Space Center became the main launch site, Boca Chica Key was used as a testing ground for early spacecraft equipment. This chapter of its past is little known today and connects the island to the beginnings of American space exploration.
