Port-Salut, Coastal commune in southern Haiti.
Port-Salut is a coastal commune in southern Haiti, situated along the Caribbean shoreline and serving as the seat of the Port-Salut Arrondissement. The territory is made up of a small urban center surrounded by wide rural sections with farms and scattered settlements.
Port-Salut was founded during the colonial period and gradually took on the role of administrative center for its surrounding territory. After Haitian independence in 1804, the commune kept this regional function.
Fishing boats pulled onto the shore and small farm plots worked by hand are a common sight throughout the commune. The pace of daily life here follows the sea in the morning and the fields in the afternoon.
Getting around the commune is easiest on foot or with local transport, as roads and services are basic throughout the area. Allowing extra time is useful, especially when moving between the coastal section and the inland rural zones.
The name Port-Salut translates from French as 'port of salvation', a name that points to the historical importance of this stretch of shore for sailors. Interestingly, many visitors recognize the name first from a French cheese rather than from this Haitian commune.
