Gonâve Island, Caribbean island in Gulf of Gonâve, Haiti.
Located 50 kilometers from Port-au-Prince, Gonâve Island stretches 37 miles in length and reaches an elevation of 778 meters above sea level.
The Taíno people named the island Guanabo and used it as their final sanctuary after Spanish colonizers invaded Hispaniola in the late 15th century.
The island forms an administrative division of Haiti's Ouest Department, containing two communes: Anse-à-Galets and Pointe-à-Raquette with 100,000 inhabitants.
Transportation across the island relies on motorcycles and donkeys, while Anse-à-Galets provides municipal electricity through diesel generators at scheduled hours.
Marine Corps Sergeant Faustin Wirkus received the title of king on Gonâve Island in 1926 and maintained this position until 1929.
