Ouest, Administrative division in Haiti
Ouest is an administrative department covering the western section of Haiti and includes the national capital of Port-au-Prince. The region comprises five distinct arrondissements organized under this single administrative framework.
The department was established in 1801 under Governor Toussaint Louverture, replacing the previous provincial system with a new administrative structure. This reorganization was part of Haiti's transformations following independence.
The region shows African and French influences visible through local festivals, traditional music, and art exhibitions centered in the capital. These cultural expressions shape everyday life and make this area a significant center for creative activity.
Port-au-Prince International Airport serves as the main entry point for travelers arriving in the region. Visiting during the drier months provides better conditions for getting around and exploring the different areas.
The region concentrates a large share of Haiti's population in urban areas, making it the most densely populated part of the country. This high concentration noticeably shapes the character of the area.
