Nationalpark Lago Enriqillo e Isla Cabritos, Caribbean national park with saltwater lake in Dominican Republic.
Nationalpark Lago Enriqillo e Isla Cabritos is a protected area centered on a saltwater lake with an island situated in one of the Caribbean's deepest depressions. The terrain includes dry forests, extensive salt flats, and brackish water zones supporting specialized wildlife.
Isla Cabritos contains archaeological traces of Taíno and Ciguaya peoples who lived there before Spanish arrival. The site was later designated as a protected area to preserve its rare ecosystems and the species found nowhere else.
The park serves as a place where visitors learn about wetlands and salt habitats through guided activities and observation. People come here to develop awareness of how wildlife adapts to harsh environments and why such places matter.
The site is extremely dry and hot, so visitors should bring plenty of water and sun protection. Most activities happen in early morning or late afternoon hours to avoid the intense heat of midday.
The park shelters one of the largest populations of American crocodiles that thrive in saltwater conditions. Two iguana species also make their home here and grow substantially larger than typical sizes for their kind.
