Malecon Center, Residential skyscraper complex on Malecon Boulevard, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Malecon Center is a residential tower complex on Malecon Boulevard in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. The three towers stand clearly above the surrounding buildings and house not only apartments but also shops, a movie theater, and a casino at their base.
The complex opened in 2003 and was one of the first large-scale projects to reshape the coastal skyline of Santo Domingo. It marked the start of a new phase in residential construction along the city's waterfront.
The complex sits along the seaside promenade where locals gather in the evenings to walk and enjoy the sea breeze. Having apartments, shops, and entertainment all in one place along the waterfront remains a relatively unusual setup in Santo Domingo.
The complex sits right on the seafront promenade, making it easy to walk along the waterfront or explore the surrounding neighborhood on foot. Visiting in the late afternoon tends to work well, as the promenade and the shops inside both come alive at that time.
The three towers are built to nearly the same design and from a distance appear as a single block, even though each is a separate building. This visual unity was intentional and gives the complex a recognizable outline when seen from the sea or the promenade.
