María Trinidad Sánchez Province
María Trinidad Sánchez Province, Province in northeastern Dominican Republic
María Trinidad Sánchez is a province along the Atlantic coast of northeastern Dominican Republic. It encompasses beaches, mangrove wetlands, and agricultural areas across four municipalities: Nagua, Cabrera, El Factor, and Río San Juan.
The province was created in 1959 under the name Julia Molina before being renamed two years later. The new name honors a female independence fighter and reflects the region's connection to Dominican history.
Fishing traditions shape daily life here, with local communities gathering regularly around fish markets and maritime celebrations. These occasions bring people together and reflect how water and seafood remain central to local identity.
Visit during the drier months when weather is most stable for exploring the region. Roads connect the municipalities to each other and southward to Santo Domingo, making travel between towns straightforward.
Laguna Gri Gri in Río San Juan contains underwater caves and tunnels bordered by mangroves that visitors can explore by boat. This natural water passage is a rare geological feature that draws those seeking something beyond typical coastal visits.
