Playa Sosúa is a beach on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, set inside a crescent-shaped bay in the municipality of Sosúa, Puerto Plata province. Coral reefs shelter the bay from strong waves, keeping the water calm and clear for most of the year, with a stretch of fine golden sand running along the shoreline.
Playa Sosúa was among the first beaches in the Dominican Republic to attract international visitors, making it an early point of reference for tourism along the northern coast. The town of Sosúa itself has a distinct past, having served as a refuge for Jewish refugees in the 1940s, a history that shaped the character of the surrounding area.
Playa Sosúa is a public beach used by locals and tourists alike, especially on weekends and holidays when the sand fills with families, food vendors, and music. The western end of the bay tends to be livelier, while the eastern side, closer to Playa Alicia, stays noticeably quieter throughout the day.
The beach is open year-round, but the water is calmest and clearest between December and April, which makes that period the most comfortable for swimming and snorkeling. Parking is available nearby, and the site is within walking distance of the town center, so it is easy to combine a beach visit with a stop for food or a look around the local streets.
The coral reefs that protect Playa Sosúa's bay sit close enough to shore that snorkelers can reach coral formations and tropical fish directly from the beach, without a boat. One of the area's notable dive sites, known as The Canyon, features underwater walls covered in marine life and is accessible to divers of various skill levels.
