Eckerd College, Liberal arts college in St. Petersburg, United States.
Eckerd College is a liberal arts college in St. Petersburg, Florida, stretching across extensive grounds along Boca Ciega Bay. The campus includes nine residence halls, direct access to the waterfront, and landscaped gardens distributed throughout the property.
The college was founded in 1958 as Florida Presbyterian College and received its current name in 1971. A local businessman enabled the institution's further development through a major donation at that time.
The name honors businessman Jack Eckerd, whose generous support permanently shaped what was formerly Florida Presbyterian College. Along the bay, students often gather between classes to read by the water or sit together on the lawns.
The Peter H. Armacost Library offers numerous work spaces, computer stations, and rooms for group study. Visitors should note that parts of the campus are privately owned and respect for ongoing academic activities is required.
The academic year follows a special calendar system with four months in fall, a single month in winter, and four months in spring. The winter month allows students to focus on a single subject and complete intensive courses or projects.
