Crooked River Light, Maritime navigation light in Carrabelle, Florida.
Crooked River Light is an iron and steel lighthouse in Carrabelle, Florida, standing about 103 feet (31 meters) tall. Inside, a spiral staircase winds upward to reach a circular observation platform at the top.
This lighthouse was built in 1895 to replace three earlier beacons on Dog Island that had been destroyed by storms. It helped guide ships through the passage between Dog Island and St. George Island.
The Keeper's House Museum displays maritime objects from the early 1900s, including navigation tools and personal items belonging to lighthouse keepers. Visitors can see how people lived and worked in this remote location.
The lighthouse welcomes visitors several days each week, and climbing the internal staircase offers views from the top. Children and visitors with mobility concerns should note the stair climb before deciding to visit.
The lighthouse originally housed a Fresnel lens made in Paris in 1894 featuring an uncommon two-part open design with a 90-degree flash pattern. This optical component represents a notable example of historical beacon engineering.
