Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve, Protected aquatic area in Sun City, US.
Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve is a protected waterway containing a network of mangrove islands, channels, and seagrass beds that stretch from the Little Manatee River to the Manatee County line. The system also includes oyster reefs that form part of the natural waterway structure.
The preserve was established in 1976 as the least developed of four aquatic preserves protecting Tampa Bay. Pre-Columbian archaeological sites in the surrounding area offer evidence of earlier human occupation.
The preserve serves researchers and conservationists working to keep Tampa Bay's ecosystem healthy. Visitors can see firsthand how protected waterways support the wildlife and plants that depend on them.
You can access the preserve through a boat ramp at Cockroach Bay Road with two marked canoe trails available. The routes wind through mangrove tunnels and past oyster reefs, with conditions that change based on tides and water levels.
The Hallelujah Keys section contains a cluster of small mangrove islands that you can only reach by small watercraft and only when tides permit. This remote spot attracts experienced boaters and nature lovers seeking more solitude.
