Lake Panasoffkee, Recreational lake in Sumter County, Florida

Lake Panasoffkee is a recreational lake in Sumter County, Florida, featuring shallow waters with submerged plants throughout much of the lake bed. This underwater vegetation creates diverse habitats that support various fish species and attract anglers year-round.

The lake area was home to a black Seminole community called Sitarkey's Village in the early 1800s, established on Boggy Island by people of Central African descent. This settlement represented a distinct cultural presence in the region during that period.

The lake has served as a fishing destination for local communities across generations. People continue to rely on its waters for both sustenance and recreation, maintaining long-standing relationships with this natural resource.

The Coleman boat ramp provides free public access to the lake and serves as the main launch point for boaters. Navigational markers on the water help guide vessels safely along established routes.

Orange groves were established near the lake in the early 1900s using native sour orange plants that had been cultivated by earlier Seminole communities. This connection between indigenous cultivation and later agricultural development created an unexpected chapter in the area's story.
