Little Lake George Wilderness, Protected wilderness area in Putnam County, Florida.
Little Lake George Wilderness is a protected area in Putnam County containing roughly 2,900 acres where dense hardwood swamps blend with pine forests along the St. Johns River. The landscape consists of water channels, wooded shorelines, and a complex mix of wetland and upland forest habitats.
The area received federal protection status in 1984, transforming this junction of the St. Johns and Oklawaha Rivers into a permanently designated wilderness sanctuary. This designation ensured the ecological integrity of the landscape would be maintained long-term.
The forest maintains its natural character by restricting human development, which allows wildlife and vegetation to thrive without interference. This protection enables visitors to experience a landscape shaped entirely by natural forces rather than human activity.
Access to the area requires a watercraft, as there are no developed roads or marked trails leading in from surrounding lands. Visitors should be comfortable on water and bring properly equipped boats to navigate the waterways.
The eastern shoreline features designated camping areas where visitors can observe the dense canopy of gum, ash, and cypress trees reflected in the water below. This vantage point provides a direct view of a classic Florida swamp forest scene from a safe, accessible location.
