Fort Pierce, Coastal city in St. Lucie County, Florida, US.

Fort Pierce sits along Florida's Atlantic Coast, connecting waterways with urban neighborhoods across roughly 54 square kilometers (21 square miles). The coastal town links residential and commercial areas with marinas and public parks along the Indian River Lagoon.

A military post from 1838 during the Second Seminole War marked the origin of today's settlement. The community received official city status in 1901 and grew into a regional center along the coast.

The city honors Benjamin Kendrick Pierce, brother of President Franklin Pierce, through its name. Visitors notice the maritime tradition along the waterfront, where fishing boats and yachts shape the urban landscape.

Travelers reach the city via Interstate 95 or US Route 1, both of which pass through the center. The regional airport lies northwest of downtown and serves smaller flights along the Treasure Coast.

The town was the only major center between Daytona Beach and West Palm Beach until the 1970s. This geographic position shaped its role as a hub for travelers and traders along Florida's east coast.
