Kilimanjaro Safaris, Safari simulation ride in Disney's Animal Kingdom, Florida
Kilimanjaro Safaris is a ride attraction in Disney's Animal Kingdom, Florida, simulating an expedition through African landscapes. Open-sided vehicles carry up to 36 guests along a route through areas where giraffes, rhinos, zebras, and hippos can be seen.
The attraction opened in 1998 alongside Disney's Animal Kingdom, using parts of a former grazing area. Later changes removed a storyline involving poachers and extended the ride duration.
The crew on each vehicle shares stories about individual animals and explains their behavior in recreated African regions. Elephant herds and lions live in areas named after landscapes such as the Ituri or Serengeti.
The ride lasts around 18 minutes and passes through sunny and shaded sections, so sun protection is recommended. Visitors wanting to see animals up close should come during cooler morning hours when they are more active.
Invisible barriers such as ditches and hidden fences separate predators from prey animals without blocking the view for visitors. The entire area covers more than 100 acres (40 hectares) of reconstructed habitats with real plants and molded rock formations.
