Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, National Battlefield Park in Cobb County, Georgia, United States
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a forested mountain park covering about 2,900 acres (1,175 hectares) with preserved Civil War battlefields, trenches, and cannon positions. The grounds feature roughly 17 miles (27 kilometers) of marked hiking trails that wind through varying elevations up to about 1,800 feet (550 meters).
The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain took place in 1864 during Sherman's campaign through Georgia and served as a key engagement in the Union's advance. The conflict shaped the broader military campaign and left deep marks on the landscape that remain visible today.
The name Kennesaw comes from the Cherokee word 'Gah-nee-sah,' which refers to burial grounds and connects the site to Native American heritage. Visitors walking through the landscape can trace this deep cultural connection to the land.
The visitor center opens during daylight hours and offers exhibits and films about the site's history. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the trails are hilly and can become slippery depending on the season.
State monuments representing Illinois, Texas, and Georgia stand throughout the park, each marking where soldiers from those states fought their positions. These monuments serve as rare physical reminders of the diverse troop origins that converged at this location.
