Tom Moreland Interchange, Interchange between Interstates 285 and 85
Tom Moreland Interchange is a major road junction north of Atlanta where Interstate 85 and Interstate 285 meet. The structure has five levels with multiple bridges and ramps that direct vehicles in different directions to manage around 300,000 vehicles daily.
Built between 1983 and 1987, the interchange replaced an older and less efficient junction known as 'Malfunction Junction' due to frequent traffic jams. The project cost around 86 million dollars and used innovative cast-in-place concrete technology for bridge construction.
The interchange can become very crowded during rush hours, so driving outside peak times is advisable when possible. Pay close attention to signs and lane markings to plan your route through the complex system correctly.
The nickname 'Spaghetti Junction' came from a traffic reporter named Dave Straub who observed the construction from above and said it looked like an upside-down bowl of spaghetti. This humorous description spread quickly among locals and is used more often than the official name today.
