Tree That Owns Itself, Legal ownership granted tree in Athens, United States.

The Tree That Owns Itself is a white oak located at the intersection of South Finley and Dearing Streets in Athens with legal ownership of itself and the surrounding land. The tree stands at this site with a protected base, creating one of the most unusual property arrangements in the nation.

The original tree was documented in newspaper reports and received its ownership rights from Colonel William Henry Jackson in the early 19th century. After the original tree fell in 1942, a new one grew from an acorn of that specimen and has continued at the same location since 1946.

The tree holds meaning as a symbol of an unusual relationship between people and nature in the local community. Visitors can read the commemorative plaques that explain why this location matters to the town.

The tree sits at a street corner near downtown Athens and is easy to find and approach. The location is open to the public, allowing visitors to stop by at any time to read the commemorative plaques.

This tree is the only example in the US where a tree and its surrounding land are legally owned by the tree itself. The story became well-known because of this completely unusual legal arrangement.
