Fort King George, Colonial fort in Darien, US
Fort King George is a restored British military outpost from the 1700s featuring a reconstructed cypress blockhouse, soldier barracks, and earthwork walls. The grounds also hold one of the oldest British military burial grounds in the Southeast.
The fort was built in 1721 as Britain's southernmost military post in North America. Fire and difficult frontier conditions forced its abandonment just over a decade later.
The site reveals how British soldiers, Native Americans, and later Scottish settlers coexisted along the Altamaha River. You can see physical traces of how different groups lived side by side in this frontier landscape.
Guided tours take you through the restored buildings, including officers' quarters and barracks, with a museum displaying objects from British, Spanish, and Native American cultures. Plan to spend a few hours exploring the grounds at a comfortable pace.
The garrison included retired soldiers from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, men too old for typical frontier service. This unusual staffing choice created real difficulties in daily operations and defense.
