Sapelo Island Range Front Light, Range front lighthouse in McIntosh County, United States.
Sapelo Island Range Front Light is a 7.6-meter iron tower with a square pyramidal skeletal frame located on Sapelo Island in Georgia. The white-painted structure stands strategically positioned to guide vessels navigating through the coastal waterways.
The lighthouse was built in 1877 to replace an earlier wooden beacon that was damaged during the Civil War. It was constructed to safely guide vessels through the Doboy Sound waterway.
The structure represents the maritime navigation heritage of Georgia's coast and forms part of the National Register of Historic Places since 1997.
The lighthouse can be found 600 feet east of the original brick tower on the island. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources manages the site for visitor access and preservation.
The cast iron structure is among the oldest surviving iron constructions in Georgia. The age and engineering method of this tower make it a notable technical landmark from the region's past.
