Yemassee, town in Beaufort and Hampton Counties, South Carolina
Yemassee is a small town in South Carolina located in Hampton County, with part extending into Beaufort County. The town features simple buildings, streets lined with old live oaks, and historic structures including Sheldon Chapel and Stoney Creek Chapel.
English settlers arrived in the area of the Yamasee people and initially lived peacefully alongside them. This harmony ended in 1715 when the Yamasee and other tribes rebelled against unfair treatment by British colonists in what became known as the Yamasee War.
The name Yemassee comes from the Yamasee Native American tribes who once lived here. Visitors can feel this heritage in local stories and in places like the old train depot and the nearby Marine barracks.
Yemassee sits just east of Interstate 95, making it easy to reach and pass through. The town has local shops, food places, and antique stores where visitors can walk around and spend time exploring at a leisurely pace.
The town played a major role in Marine training, with a historic train depot through which thousands of recruits passed on their way to boot camp at Parris Island. Today the depot and old Marine barracks stand as quiet reminders of that era and the many young men who came through.
