TPC Sawgrass, Championship golf course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
TPC Sawgrass is a golf course in Ponte Vedra Beach in northeastern Florida with two championship courses on about 415 acres of swampland. The main course is the Stadium Course with 18 holes, narrow fairways and fast greens between natural marshes and sand bunkers.
The PGA Tour purchased the land in 1979 for one dollar and opened the facility in 1980 as the first Tournament Players Club of the organization. Architect Pete Dye designed the course with artificial elevations for spectators, which coined the term Stadium Course.
The par-3 17th hole with its water-surrounded green draws spectators from around the world who gather on elevated grass mounds. These built-up viewing areas offer stadium-like sightlines and turn the tournament into an experience for thousands at once.
The facility sits about one mile from the Atlantic and offers a performance center for training and several restaurants alongside the courses. Visitors will also find accommodation options on site and can play both championship courses.
Each year during the Players Championship up to 100,000 balls land in the water around the 17th green and are later retrieved by divers. The island green measures only about 3,000 square feet (280 square meters) and sits completely exposed in the pond with no connection to land.
