Seven Oaks, Bluffton SC, Historic residence in Bluffton, South Carolina.
Seven Oaks is a two-story house with double verandas on the south and east sides and two exterior chimneys built in Greek Revival style. The building rests on an unusual foundation system and sits within a district containing several other historic homes from the same era.
The house was built in 1850 during a period of growth in the region. It later served as a boarding house during the 1920s and underwent significant changes over subsequent decades.
The house takes its name from seven large live oak stumps that lie beneath the structure and form its foundation. This unusual support system reflects local building practices and makes the property a remarkable example of creative problem-solving in the 19th century.
The house is part of Bluffton's historic district and sits on Calhoun Street in the town center. As a private residence today, the exterior can be viewed from the street, but the interior is not open to the public.
The house was built by Colonel Middleton Stuart and had a notable connection to local history. After extensive restoration work beginning in 2007, the property took on a new role in preserving the town's cultural heritage.
