Santee National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge on Lake Marion, South Carolina
The 15,000-acre refuge extends along Lake Marion's northern shore, containing mixed hardwoods, pines, marshes, impoundments, and open water areas.
The refuge land includes the Santee Native American mound, which became the location of British Fort Watson until its capture by colonial forces in 1781.
The Santee Indian Mound represents the easternmost known site of Mississippian culture, containing significant archaeological artifacts and burial grounds from ancient settlements.
The visitor center operates from Tuesday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, offering maps, brochures, and loaner backpacks with binoculars.
During winter months, the refuge hosts large concentrations of Canada geese from the Southern James Bay population alongside numerous other migratory waterfowl species.
