Santee National Wildlife Refuge

Santee National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area along Lake Marion's northern shore containing mixed forests, wetlands, and open water. The land supports different habitats that provide food and shelter for wildlife.

The site contains a Native American mound preserving traces of an ancient civilization. A British fort was later built at this location and played a role during the American Revolution.

The name honors the Santee people who lived in this region long ago. Visitors can still see ancient earthworks that mark where these communities once settled.

A visitor center provides information and equipment for exploring the grounds. Those visiting should prepare for changing weather conditions and bring waterproof clothing.

During winter months thousands of Canada geese from northern regions gather here to rest on the water. These large bird concentrations make the refuge a special natural spectacle during the cold season.
