Excelsior District, Residential neighborhood in southeastern San Francisco, US.

The Excelsior District is a residential area in southeastern San Francisco situated between Mission Street and McLaren Park. Streets throughout the neighborhood bear names of international cities and countries, creating a distinctive layout.

The land was originally part of a large ranch called Rancho Rincon de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo and became official as Excelsior Homestead in 1869. This marked the start of its development as a residential community.

The neighborhood is home to large Latino and Filipino communities whose presence shapes daily life in the streets and storefronts. You will notice Spanish and Tagalog in shops, restaurants, and community spaces throughout the area.

Housing costs here are lower than in many other parts of San Francisco, and public transportation is readily available. The neighborhood provides good access to McLaren Park for outdoor activities.

The Granada Theater building opened in 1922 as the neighborhood's main entertainment venue and operated for decades. Today it has been converted to retail use but still displays the distinctive architecture from its theater days.
