Columbus Avenue, street in San Francisco, United States
Columbus Avenue is a diagonal street that crosses North Beach and Chinatown in San Francisco, United States. It has a long row of shops, cafes, and old buildings whose signs and facades change quickly from block to block.
The road was first laid out in the 1870s under the name Montgomery Avenue. It received its current name in 1909 during a period when local leaders wanted to honor Christopher Columbus.
The mix of signs in English, Chinese, and Italian shows how several communities share the same commercial stretch. At night, the lights from cafés and music clubs turn the sidewalk into a place for conversation rather than just passing through.
Walking the whole street takes time because it cuts across several neighborhoods with different slopes and pavement. Flat sections are easier near the water, while the middle stretch climbs more noticeably.
A small side passage called Jack Kerouac Alley holds painted walls and plaques devoted to writers who once worked nearby. Many people miss it because the entrance is narrow and blends into the storefronts.
