The Russian Hill-Vallejo Street Crest Historic District spans 4 acres with retaining walls, natural bluffs, and 27 contributing buildings along Broadway and Jones Street.
The district survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, preserving architectural works by notable designers Willis Polk, Julia Morgan, and Charles F Whittlesey.
Former residents of the district include photographer Dorothea Lange, artist Maynard Dixon, and writer Rose Wilder Lane, establishing its role in San Francisco arts.
The district encompasses buildings from 1020-1032 Broadway, 1-49 Florence Street, 1728-1742 Jones Street, and additional addresses between Taylor and Vallejo Streets.
The Atkinson House, constructed in 1853, represents one of the earliest examples of Italianate architecture in San Francisco within the district boundaries.
