Lagunitas, unincorporated community in California, United States
Lagunitas is a small unincorporated community in Marin County, California, situated in hilly terrain surrounded by forests and small water bodies. Sir Francis Drake Boulevard serves as the main road through the area, while Lagunitas Creek runs nearby and connects to Tomales Bay and eventually the Pacific Ocean.
The community was founded over 100 years ago, with its first post office opening in 1906 to connect it with the broader country. This early infrastructure marked the start of Lagunitas establishing itself as a settled place.
The name Lagunitas comes from Spanish, meaning "little lagoons," and these small water bodies shape how residents experience their surroundings daily. People here spend time walking dirt roads and sitting by the creek, which are natural gathering points in the community.
Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is the only land route in and out of the area, making it the main way most visitors and residents travel. Bus routes connect the community to larger towns and the broader Bay Area, and while there are no local airports, major regional ones are nearby.
The community is home to the only public Montessori school in all of Marin County, an educational institution that draws families from the wider region. The two small school buildings sit next to each other and shape community life in their own way.
