Ben Lomond is a small community nestled in the San Lorenzo Valley amid redwood forests along California's Central Coast. The area features forested slopes and mountain terrain with local shops and outdoor recreation options throughout the region.
The area was originally known as Pacific Mills, a logging settlement, before being renamed in 1887. Residents chose the new name when establishing their post office.
The name comes from a Scottish mountain and honors John Burns, who settled on the western ridge in 1851 and shaped the early community.
The area lies about 12 km (7 miles) from Santa Cruz and is accessible via State Highway 9. Visitors will find hiking trails, local shops, and community facilities for various activities.
The temperature records show extreme variations, from a high of 121°F in September 2020 to a low of 15°F in December 1990.
