Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley, branch campus in California
Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley is a branch campus of Carnegie Mellon University located at Moffett Field, California, near NASA Research Park. It focuses on graduate-level programs in computer science, software engineering, and related technical fields.
The campus opened in 2002, established to bring Carnegie Mellon's academic programs directly into the heart of the technology industry on the West Coast. It was one of the first moves by a major East Coast research university to plant a permanent presence in the region.
The campus sits in the middle of one of the densest concentrations of technology companies in the world, which shapes the daily rhythm of student life. Guest speakers from nearby firms visit regularly, making the line between classroom and industry noticeably thin.
The campus is located within Moffett Field, a former military airfield now managed by NASA, which means access by public transit can require some planning. Having a car or bicycle makes arrival much easier, especially on a first visit.
The site at Moffett Field still has historic airship hangars from the 1930s on the same grounds, making the backdrop of a graduate computer science campus rather unusual. Visitors walking outside the buildings can spot these enormous structures just a short distance away.
