Orinda

Orinda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, located about 16 miles (26 km) east of Oakland. It spreads across wooded hills with residential neighborhoods connected by winding roads.

The area was gradually settled over a century before organizing as an independent city in 1985. This transformation gave residents more control over local matters.

The name comes from Katherine Rheem, who named her estate after a poem she read. Today residents tend their gardens and attend local theater performances.

Most routes pass through residential areas with steep sections and limited sidewalks. Visitors should use a car to reach different parts.

The city government employs only a small staff, contracting many services to specialized companies. This lean approach keeps costs down and decision-making flexible.
