Leuschner Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Lafayette, California.
Leuschner Observatory is an astronomical facility in Lafayette housing a large optical telescope equipped with advanced sensor technology for sky observation. The equipment enables both visual and infrared-based measurements and is used mainly for teaching and research purposes.
The observatory was moved to its current Lafayette location in 1965 from UC Berkeley's campus following a National Science Foundation grant. This relocation allowed modern equipment to be installed and expanded the scope of scientific work.
This observatory serves the university as a teaching facility where students work with professional equipment and conduct their own research projects. Visitors can observe how astronomy is taught and practiced in real work.
The facility sits on elevated terrain with good sky visibility and is best accessible on clear nights. Visitors should contact ahead to check opening times and access, as the site is primarily dedicated to research operations.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the facility participated in supernova observation programs and helped discover several new stars exploding in the sky. One of these discoveries was a supernova in the famous Whirlpool Galaxy, which interested astronomers worldwide.
