Lafayette Reservoir, water storage reservoir in Contra Costa County, California, USA
Lafayette Reservoir is a drinking water storage lake in Contra Costa County, California, set among oak-covered hills east of the city of Lafayette. A trail runs around the water, and small docks allow fishing along the shore.
The reservoir was built in the 1920s to supply water to the growing communities of the East Bay area. It has been managed by the East Bay Municipal Utility District since the district was founded, and it continues to serve that same purpose today.
A loop trail of about 3 miles (5 km) circles the water and is open to walkers and cyclists, though some stretches can get muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes help. Fishing is allowed with a valid California fishing license, and small boats and kayaks are available to rent on site.
Although the reservoir is a working part of the regional water supply, it has been open to the public for recreation since the 1960s, which is unusual for an active drinking water facility. On weekdays the trail is often nearly empty, making it easy to walk the full loop without crowds.
