Tilden Park Merry-Go-Round, Historic carousel in Contra Costa County, US
Tilden Park Merry-Go-Round is a historic carousel in Contra Costa County featuring hand-carved wooden animals on its outer rows and cast aluminum figures on the inner section. The structure spans four circular levels, combining traditional wooden craftsmanship with later metal construction.
The carousel was built in 1911 by the Herschell-Spillman Company and traveled to various locations throughout California. It became permanently installed at Tilden Park in 1948, where it has remained ever since.
The carousel displays hand-carved wooden animals on its outer sections and cast metal figures on the inner section. The ornamental painted rounding boards visible today were added during a significant renovation in the 1950s.
The carousel operates on most days when weather permits, with more frequent runs during busy seasons. It is easily accessible from nearby parking and welcoming to visitors of all ages.
The carousel was expanded in 1950 from three rows to four, adding cast aluminum animals alongside the original wooden horses. This blend of old and new shows how the ride adapted and grew over time.
