Grizzly Peak, Hill in Berkeley Hills, United States.
Grizzly Peak is a hill in the Berkeley Hills that rises to about 1,758 feet (536 m) within Tilden Regional Park. The summit sits along the border between Alameda and Contra Costa counties and is accessible by several hiking trails from parking areas on Grizzly Peak Boulevard.
The peak takes its name from California grizzly bears that lived in the area until the 1860s, with the last local sighting recorded in Strawberry Canyon. Settlement and development transformed the region from wild habitat into the park landscape visible today.
The peak draws people who stop along Grizzly Peak Boulevard to look out over the San Francisco Bay, the university campus, and distant landmarks below. The road itself has become a popular viewing spot where visitors naturally gather to take in the scenery.
Several hiking trails lead to the summit with parking available along Grizzly Peak Boulevard and Skyline Boulevard. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy the clearest views.
Street luge racers use the steep grade for downhill runs from Skyline Boulevard through the canyon toward Berkeley. This unofficial activity has developed a following among thrill-seekers, though authorities discourage it.
