Church of St. Joseph

Church of St. Joseph is a Romanesque Revival building at K Street in Los Banos with characteristic rounded arches and barrel vaults throughout its interior. The roof over the apse slopes gently, giving the structure a broad, grounded appearance.

A San Francisco architect designed this building in 1923, helping shape early 1900s Los Banos. It remains one of only three surviving works by this designer across the entire state.

The building reflects Spanish architectural traditions common in early 1900s California churches, connecting the community to broader regional building practices. The rounded arches and vaults create visual weight that draws visitors into the space immediately.

The building sits in downtown Los Banos and is easily walkable from nearby parking areas. A local arts council currently operates from the site, so check ahead to confirm it is open for visitors.

This is the only Romanesque Revival building in the Los Banos region and received national preservation recognition in 2004. Despite its architectural significance, it remains largely unknown to most California visitors.
