Carquinez Bridge, Toll bridge in Vallejo, United States.
Carquinez Bridge is a road crossing in the San Francisco Bay Area linking Vallejo and Crockett across the Carquinez Strait. The steel structure runs for 1056 meters (about 3500 feet) and combines suspension and cantilever elements in a single span.
The bridge opened on November 11, 2003, replacing an older crossing from the 1920s. It came about as part of a modernization program for the transportation routes around San Francisco Bay.
The name Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge honors a worker who helped build several spans across the bay during his career. Drivers today see the twin steel arches rising over the water, guiding traffic between the shores.
Drivers pay a toll when crossing in the eastbound direction, while the westbound return is free. The roadway allows a continuous connection between the two shores without waiting under normal conditions.
The structure uses two different support systems in a single span, which is rather uncommon in modern bridges. This mix came from the particular conditions of the strait and the requirements for the span length.
